Uninsured Drivers
According to the Home Office there are around 1.2 million (5% of all motorists) who regularly drive whilst uninsured. These drivers are statistically more likely to cause road traffic accidents, and to breach other road traffic requirements than other motorists. Uninsured and untraced drivers are responsible for many road accidents that cause death or serious injury quite apart from the heartache, distress and disruption that these incidents bring. Their involvement in fatal accidents has been the subject of considerable public controversy.

The Motor Insurers Bureau is a body set up to meet the costs of accidents suffered by victims of uninsured drivers. The Bureau imposes a levy on all the major motor insurance companies to meet these claims. These costs are passed onto policyholders in the form of higher premiums for honest drivers, estimated to be in the range of £15-£20 for each policyholder.
The right to claim compensation from the Bureau is subject to a number of important conditions, which can be strictly imposed. For example, not many people know that they could lose the right to claim any compensation from the Bureau if the responsible driver fails to produce details of their insurance policy at the accident scene or shortly thereafter, and they fail to report this promptly to the police. Many other conditions apply to the right to claim compensation for the acts of uninsured drivers and untraced drivers. This is why it is crucial to seek expert professional advice as soon as possible after the accident. At Bond Pearce solicitors we have a dedicated team of expert lawyers experienced in handling claims against uninsured and untraced drivers.
