Mooring Chain Crushes Workers Hand
Tony lay on the deck of the boat helping to raise a mooring chain on a barge. He had to hook the winch as far down the chain as he could. His colleague, who was operating the winch and hook was unable to see Tony from where he was. He began to raise the winch before checking that Tony had moved clear. Tony's hand was still holding the hook and became caught between the wire and the edge of the barge. Tony suffered severe injuries to his right hand and had to have the top part of his ring and middle finger removed.
He has been unable to attend work and has had to have help with some of his personal care.
