Breast cancer surgeon accused of botched operations
A surgeon "butchered" one patient and botched several breast operations, The General Medical Council (GMC) was told.
The GMC heard how the breast surgeon boasted about his prowess while at the bedside of a cancer patient who was having to endure a series of operations after he botched a breast reconstruction.
The woman, who at one stage had a hole in her belly the size of two fists and felt she had been "butchered", said his comments had made her "extremely angry".
The GMC's Fitness to Practise Panel in Manchester is hearing allegations that the surgeon botched breast operations on five other women, including one whose nipple fell off and others whose gaping wounds became infected with MRSA and flesh-eating bugs.
A further five cases could also be put towards allegations of misconduct and deficient professional performance depending on the outcome of separate legal proceedings.
The hearing has been told that the surgeon was primarily a vascular surgeon, specialising in operations involving the blood supply system but he began conducting breast reconstruction and reduction surgery at the Staffordshire hospital after it failed to appoint a specialist in the field, also operating at a local private hospital.
The GMC has imposed interim bans preventing him performing breast surgery since 2005, although he is permitted to carry out other types of surgery.
The surgeon denies the charges, and the hearing continues.
