Passenger injured in plane crash awarded compensation

A passenger left injured and traumatised after a plane crashed during its landing at an airport in the Isles of Scilly has been awarded compensation.

The light Piper aircraft, with four people on board, was coming in to land when it crashed in what the Police described as a "ground collision" near the runway.

A 60 year old man had been aboard the small plane travelling the short distant from Exeter to the Isles of Scilly. Robert described how he knew they were going to crash and began to fear that he was going to die.

Robert suffered injuries to both his shoulders and severe bruising which prevented him from being able to move his left arm or hand. He went in to shock and remembers shaky and bring extremely cold.

He was flown by air ambulance to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro. The other three casualties described by the police as "walking wounded" were taken to the hospital in St Mary's.

Following the accident Robert remained in a great deal of pain. However this was not the only injury he sustained from the crash. He developed mild post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which meant he suffered anxiety whenever he travelled.

"PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm occurred or was threatened," said Nicholas Seymour the solicitor dealing with Robert's case.

"Even very mild PTSD can greatly affect the sufferer. The symptoms Robert suffered following the plane crash had a great impact on his work as he would often have to travel either by air or by train to attend appointments in London."
