Poor hygiene in hospitals face fines for NHS trusts

The NHS trusts will be fined up to £50,000 to any hospitals which breach hygiene regulations in a crackdown on hospital infections.
Inspectors will be able to prosecute dirty hospitals and clinics, and impose sanctions ranging from fixed penalty fines to closure of wards, clinics or services.
If hospitals fail to meet minimum hygiene standards they will be issued with fixed penalty notices with fines of up to £4,000. Obstructing an inspector or failing to provide documents or information will attract fixed penalty fines of £1,250.
More serious offences, such as failure to act on an improvement notice following an outbreak of infection in a hospital could lead to prosecution, carrying a maximum £50,000 fine.
